In 1955, Chevrolet is reported as making over 1.7 million passenger cars not including Corvette. The TriFive red book has production pegged at 1,776,652 cars while 75 Years of Chevrolet states that 1,713,478 units were produced for the 1955 model year. In either case, these numbers did not include Canadian built cars which are reported as an additional 79,030 units and 4,668  imported. Sales of Chevrolet's passenger cars for the model year resulted in record numbers, and sales which would not be seen again until 1963 when the records were exceeded. Pretty impressive is the fact that the 55 Chevy made up a staggering 24% of combined North American auto sales that year!

VIN Numbers

Serial Numbers were stamped on a plate on the left front door hinge pillar (center pillar on Corvair and on the driver-side door post on Corvette). The Fisher Body number plate on the right-hand side of the cowl gives additional information such as the body style number, the production sequence number, the trim (upholstery) number code and the paint number code.

***NOTE

Canadian models were produced with a fender tag located atop the firewall on the passenger side cowl. Although much of the data can be decoded similar to that of the US production units, there are in fact a few subtle differences like production colors and trim styles of the 150 series cars. An example is the Canadian 150 cars having rear quarter spears where US production units did not have rear trim.

GM of Canada retains production records for Canadian built cars and you can contact GM Vintage Services in Canada to purchase a build sheet for your car if produced in Canada. (See contact info and link to GM Vintage Service below)
